Buffalo Chinese School
2/1/2011
Happy Holidays everyone! As we celebrate Chinese New Year, our Chinese school has successfully entered the Spring semester in 2011. We
wish that you continue to enjoy the Chinese language as well as Chinese culture education with our Chinese School.
In the past four months, our Chinese school staff has worked diligently to ensure that the school runs smoothly. Our web master Ms. Liping
Chen (陈丽萍) kept our website up-to-date. Since our website is the best means of communication to our students and parents, it is critical to
have information current. Our school treasurer Ms. Hui Zhang(张辉) worked very hard to keep track of over 150 students and their
parents’ names/classes. She also helps buying teaching materials for our students and teachers. Our book administrator Dr. Chunhao Li (李
春好) and his wife WeiYan Zhang (张维妍) are at school every week to ensure our teachers and kids have the books they need. Without
them, the school would not have run so successfully.
In Sept. 2010, we started with 16 classes. Due to large demand, we have expanded to 18 classes now. We have a really devoted team of
teachers. Many teachers have been with the school for a long time, some for over ten years. They have devoted countless Saturdays to teach
Chinese language and culture as our kids grow from little girls and boys to high school teenagers. They are
Ms. Yun Mo (莫耘), Ms. Ming Yu (于明), Ms. Yan Li ( 李岩),
Ms. Chaoyan Liu (刘超燕), Ms. Jun Wang ( 汪君), Ms. Shue Zhen (郑书娥),
Ms. He Zhuang ( 庄和),Ms. Wan Zhang (张宛), Ms. Yajie Zhang (张雅洁)
Ms. Lijuan Zhang(张丽娟).
We also welcomed new teachers this school year,
Ms. Sharon Shen (申融), Ms. Shan Zhao (赵 闪), Ms. Bo Zhong (钟波),
Ms. Leilani Wang (王蔚君), Ms. Yili Pei (裴仪丽), Ms. ZhaoHui Zhang (张朝晖)
Ms. QiongQiong Chen (陈琼琼), Ms. Yajuan Xiang (香雅娟) Ms. Qian Ding (丁倩).
They all majored in Chinese literature or educational subjects. We are so fortunate to have this highly-qualified and devoted team. Their
only true reward is the progress in their students. Not only do they spend all their Saturday mornings at the school, many of them also use
their own money to buy presents to reward their students. We are sure all our students and parents can attest to their devotion and caring for
our kids.
In the past several months, under the guidance of our board chair Dr. Chunming Qiao (乔春明), the Buffalo Chinese School formed a stronger
tie with the UB Confucius Institute (UB CI). We had a conference with UB CI to share our Chinese education experience in Oct. 2010. The
director of UBCI also visited our Chinese school several times. We think the support from UBCI will enrich our programs.
Last semester, we also started a new class – Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) for children. Ms. Sharon (申融) welcomed this idea and took
the challenge. We have received many inquiries from non-Chinese speaking families. We believe this CSL class opens our doors to kids from
every background who are interested in Chinese literature and culture.
This class is in addition to our existing adult CSL class. Ms. Lijuan Zhang is very passionate about the adult class. Her dedication and passion
are appreciated by her students. This semester, this class has grown to 7 students. Many of the adult students are doing business with
Chinese. We truly believe our school will be valuable for their understanding of Chinese culture and will help their business.
We are striving to maintain small class sizes. This spring semester, we have already added another grade 2 class to meet the demand of
increased student enrollment. We will continue to search for new qualified and devoted teachers and maintain a low student/teacher ratio.
Academically, we will again participate in the Worldwide Youth Chinese Language Tests (YCT). Last year, forty-two students participated in
the YCT tests from levels 1 to 4. All passed their respective levels. We expect more students will participate this year, and move onto the next
level and get better scores.
There are a total of 28 weekends planned for the 2010-2011 school year. That’s more than half of the Saturdays in one year. Parents send
their kids to our school on these Saturdays, despite heavy snows in Buffalo. The participation of the parents and students, and the dedication
of our teachers and staff are making our Chinese school strong. We are looking forward to another successful Spring semester in 2011.

Dear all,
I hope you all had a great holiday! For us Chinese, the holiday is usually longer because we are still anxiously waiting for the Chinese New
Year!
We have been striving to maintain a small class sizes. Since 陈琼琼's class has 14 students, we have been looking for new teacher to open a
new class. We are very fortunately to have 香雅娟 join us. 雅娟 is a Ph.D candidate student from UB, and is currently working at UB early
childhood education center, so she already knows some of our young students who graduated from her center. 雅娟 and 琼琼 are roommates.
So it is great that they can share the teaching experience and materials to the same level of classes.
They are going to teach class 2B and 2C (formerly 3A for 陈琼琼's class). I reclassified them since they are going to teach book 2 this semester.
Again, 雅娟, welcome to our Chinese school!
Since Zhong Bo is on mateternity leave, Leilani Wang has been helping teacher our Kindergarten class since last month. Leilani graduated
from Taiwan Normal University majored in Chinese literature. Currently she is a PhD student at UB.

In order to ensure all our students in Chinese school to have more chance to learn from and talk with teachers, we are doing our best to make
each class in a small group (less than 10 students).
As a result, we are introducing new teachers to help us. Please join us to welcome the new teacher for this class, Mrs. Zhao Shan.
Mrs. Zhao Shan has been living in Buffalo area since 1999, and she got MBA from UB after she graduated from Tongji university in Shanghai.
She speaks both Chinese and English very well.
She is very familiar with our Chinese school (She is also the parent of our Chinese school student) and very willing to help us to teach the kids.
Please provide continuous support to Mrs. Zhao Shan as you did with current teacher.
Current teacher for this class, Mrs. Zhang Zhaohui will help us with grade 1 class(15 students currently). Mrs. Zhang Zhaohui has been
working very hard with this class.
Because this is our first time to have this Pre-K class, so there was no existing text material. She searched and found the wonderrful material
for this class.
Let's thank again Mrs. Zhang Zhaohui for her hard work done for this class!
Best regards,
Assistant Principle of Buffalo Chinese School
Meisen Li
Buffalo Chinese School is starting new CSL class – Chinese as a Second Language
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear all,
We are excited to announce that our Buffalo Chinese School is starting a new class – Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) on Oct. 23rd, 2010.
This will be in addition to our existing Adult CSL class, but will be targeted towards ages 4 to 18.
Thanks to our dedicated teachers, we have attracted increasing student enrollment to the Chinese school over the years. As you know, most
students are from Chinese families and can already speak and listen reasonably well in Chinese. We have also a significant number of
students who do not have any Chinese background. In the past, we have placed them in our existing classes, but sometimes, this wasn’t the
best match. This has also posed a dilemma for the teachers, trying to accommodate the different skill levels. We have been trying to find a
better solution to the non-native speakers’ situation.
In responding to this interest, we are opening a new class. Our teacher will be Sharon Wang (申融). Sharon has been working as a Sr. Risk
Analyst for JP Morgan Chase & Co. for the past 15 years. She majored in English literature and taught English as a second language to
freshmen and sophomores. She also instructed future middle school teachers in educational methods and techniques. We are fortunate to
have Sharon to take on the challenge of expanding our horizon. We believe this CSL class will help kids from every background who are
interested in Chinese literature and culture.
For this semester, we will start at CSL level 1 – for Chinese beginners. I believe Sharon’s teaching experience in ESL will be a great asset for
teaching CSL.
If you are interested, please visit our website, and select the registration tab. Please send in the registration forms (one child per form) to
BuffaloChineseSchool@gmail.com.
Look forward to seeing you on Oct. 23rd.
Dear parents and students,
The Buffalo Chinese School started on Sept, 11. So far, we have received over 120 student registration.
Everyone on the school staff has been busy to make sure the new school year starts smoothly. I would like to take this opportunity to keep you
updated for the school news.
Our kindergarten and pre-k program are overwhelmingly welcome. On the first day of school, we have 28 students in our kindergarten class.
So we have added a new pre-k class last week to accommodate 4-year old kids. Currently, Ms. Bo Zhong is teaching Kindergarten class and
Ms. Zhang ZhaoHui is teaching our pre-k class. Ms. Zhong graduated from a teacher’s school majoring in art design. Needless to say, she has
incorporated drawing in her every class. Ms. Zhang also graduated in a teacher’s school in China, majored in Chinese literature. She has
taught Chinese in a University for many years before she came to US. Her experience in teaching Chinese will be a great asset for our kids.
Our Chinese school also continues an adult class for non-Chinese native speakers. The age can range from teenage to adult. Our teacher Ms.
Zhang Lijuan is very passionate about this class. Ms. Zhang majored in Chinese literature and taught colleges before she came to US.
Currently, she works at HSBC as a quality assurance analyst. She evaluates HSBC’s customer service in three different languages. So her
real work experience is a great asset to connect with adults who are interested in learning Chinese.
In addition, we have a range of classes from first grade to 9th grade. I would like to introduce you more about our teachers in the future
communications. As always, we are looking for qualified and kid-loving teachers. Chinese school is a non-profit organization. All the staff
and teachers are volunteers. If you are interested or experienced in teaching, please send your resume to BuffaloChineseSchool@gmail.com.
Look forward to seeing you on Sept. 25th.
Happy moon festival!
important staff member. She will make sure our financial sheet is balanced. When school starts, she will be at North High to receive checks
($80 per child per semester). Please make sure to pay as soon as possible before she comes looking for you J.
Liping Chen (陈丽萍,chen605@yahoo.com) is our web master. Liping works in a software company as a developer, so our website is in good
hands. If you have any suggestions or would like to post anything on the website, please contact Liping. The website has up-to-date
information on the school schedule.
Chunhao Li ( 李春好,cli9@buffalo.edu) is an assistant professor at UB and is our Textbook Administrator. So if you or your students/kids need
new books, please contact Chunhao. Please try to notify Chunhao at least one week ahead of time.
